I am glad that these issues are getting international exposure we do need human rights support more pressure on to bring in stricter laws. Its fraustrating enough to see forced marriages and to see honour killings in such large number is ridiculous!

In Bangalore we do not hear much honour killings but there is high number of forced marriages. Certain parts of India like shown in the documentry have high number of honour killings which needs to be tackled.

I watched it last night. In some ways, I wasn't shocked as we know by now this goes on - what struck me most was the fear of change and the thought of being corrupted by western ways and values. The power that the men wield... As the reporter said, internet, TV, mobile phones, all make it easier for people to form their own views and take their own decisions. Education of women has got to be a priority, everywhere. It won't happen overnight, but I know there are a lot of active organisations out there working behind the scenes - like the man who was interviewed - good for him! And people championing ideas such as microloans (incredibly successful in Bangladesh) which means women start making a contribution and being more respected.

Yes economic power and educational  influence do make a difference to the lives of women in particular.   However there are so many women working in India for low wages, and many men in villages leave the work to women, somehow until the money increase for women and men valuing the worth of women, many remain entrenched under the superstitous beliefs that communities cling to. Ofcourse Honour and Shame also influence what happens.

Finally got round to watching the Unreported World programme....could feel my anger rising everytime they showed and talked about what the couples had to go through just to be together.  How these fucking dinosaurs can run rampant over people wanting to make their own choices in life is beyond me!  EVERYONE in this world has the right to choose how they want to live their life and who they want to share it with, no exceptions!!
