I agree with you Sweetchics that maybe the 5 years in cases of sham marriages...would allow for a man or woman to think that they dont have to do something to please the family or whoever...and give them a route to escape by?

I also think that that feeling CG describes of being people being treated like criminals,is a very real concern, the feeling that if they treat you seriously or the situation so seriously that they/you, no longer function with human emotion of any sort,is really scary!! I dont know if that is changing? or will ever change?

I agree saffron, it's a chicken and egg situation with the issue of people being treated like criminals. You find there are cases where people have gone through the system and done whatever they need to do to ensure they follow the law, then suddenly they're denied a visa for whatever reason and they try to appeal but that falls on deaf ears so they feel their only option is to go underground. So some of these people are victims of the system, and at the same time the system is meant to be there to help them. So who's innocent and who's not?? I have friends who have had to take the Home Office to court for unfair and biased treatment and usually when it gets to appeal stage HO cave because most of the time they don't have legitimate reason for rejecting visa applications. It's only in the last 2 years that the high court ruled that visa denials should be based on law and not someone's idea of legitimacy, otherwise it's potentially a breach of human rights. All these issues go undetected because alot of foreigners are not aware of their rights and feel like they can't fight the system and win, so they end up leaving feeling disgruntled, or stay and go underground. Either way families are torn apart, lives are destroyed and innocent suffer.

It's just not as clear cut as people make it out to be.

You describe well SC about how systems can operate..and I cant agree more,we pride ourselves in this country to some extent of the infastructure and control for the good of all, however there is as much corruption as any where else in the world interms of where judgements and mistakes are made in the delivery and execution of services.

So in some ways some of the new changes should control how workers operate in these areas.
