Yikes I thought it was later this month!!

This book is crucial, and we should all read it. The momentum it will generate will take things to an even higher level.

Thanks for the tip Saffron!

Please can you, and anyone else who sees coverage on the web, put the links on this thread.

I will sticky it so that it gets max attention.

@Saffron,

'Shame' opened my eyes in terms of the hardships asian women face in here.Even in India i think women wouldnt have faced problems to this extent (atleast in metro cities)
Here i m coming from an typical middleclass conservative family in a different country where my family has never been to on my own.
I feel Jasvinder Sanghera might have got things wrong in areas of her life (i really sympathise for Jassey)
but we all make mistakes n learn from them dont we  Roll Eyes
'Karma Nirvana' is really a great boon for all the asian women in this society.I wish more women stood up to their rights.
Family is important no doubt, but u live only once.
Even though Jasvinder had done things which broke her parents heart, she was the one in the end who took care of them whereas rest of her sibilings who claimed they cared abt thier family didnt.
family responsibilities is diff from love life(atleast if u go wrong it was ur mistake not somebody else,If u get it right BINGO!)

Great book! looking forward to the second book.

Thank you AC  Grin

Hi Chweetgurl,

Its good to hear your view on the book shame...as a woman yourself who have gronwn up in india.

Its interesting you saying that women in india in the metro cities didn't face these problems to the same extent..I have some views on that, but perhaps others might give theirs on here.

You say that your family would never have left you on your own, Jasvinder didn't want to leave home,I saw her as having no choice ,(she made numerous attempts to be reconciled with her family as you know from the book,)because if she'd stayed she would have to go through the marriage..no other choice, sh'd been locked in her bedroom and jassie gave her a way to escape. She was only a child on 15 years, where could she have gone? who would have listened and been there for her?and she took the only way that there was.She tried to be true to herself which I admire her for, as so many women choose to deny the truth of their relationship and remain in unhappy marriages.

We can also learn from courage not only mistakes, courage is harder I think.

Family continues to be important to us all,its this we are here to keep together and believe is possible.

Im glad you se Karma Nirvana that Jasvinder set up as a positive and neccesary organization for the rights of women.

What do you mean about family responsibilty being different from love life? Choosing to marry someone you care about and love and they recprocating that...is not a mistake ,if it goes wrong thats no different to any marriage or relationship out there, as relationships do and can go wrong, even in arranged marriages...?

Saffron,

Thanks for the reminder about The Observer. I didn't get a chance to buy it but have found this link and watched Jasvinder's video and read the stories of the other women. Thought others might want to have a look:

Thanks for putting up that link Starlight.

I managed to get the Observer today, and the link has all the text from the article.

For those who don't know, one of ladies listed is our very own Saffron. She has bravely spoken out, and has given her permission to point that out on MixTogether.

If you read this, please do sign this thread. I would like to applaud Saffron for all the hard work she has done, and the bravery she has shown in getting her story into the national press so that it can help others.
