Another book review...

"HONOUR KILLING"....by Ayse Onal...

This isn't usually my kind of read,  as I prefer autobiographies...

But it is a very well researched book ...

its account of ruined lives...both of victims and  killers...some in middle east but not all ..some refeneces to England also..she spoke to imprisoned men in Turkey.

From the women who suffered ...well its worth reading what situations they were in and how they knew the dangers ahead of time and the powerles ness of these situations and finding safety in their country.

I happen to read 'gifted' it was interesting but it sad that a very young girl put under so much pressure to be 'sucessfull'  thats quite unfair..I did expect her to revolt but didnt expect the twists and turns.

'Dishonoured' does sound interesting i had a look at her story in google after our discussion here..she has come a long way..will have it added in my wishlist.Thank u saffron.

Am really loving this forum...I should be working but am busy reading all the stories...very naughty!

Wow...lots of books to read. I am reading Hannah Shah's book - The Imam's Daughter and I've purchased Jasvinder's two books - Shame and Daughters of Shame. I hear she has another book coming out this year, will def look to get that as well. Thanks for your suggestions, will def look those up and add to my already overloaded 'to-read' list...  Smiley Tongue

Do you guys want suggestions for books relating specifically to inter-faith/ mixed race etc marriages? If not, can I suggest 'Broken Open' by Elizabeth Lesser. Really good, spiritual book that just talks about getting through pain and loss. I would lend you but I want to read it again... Grin Grin

Cheerio...

Dear Sweetchics

It's great to have another avid reader on the forum! Have you seen our book list? I've been keeping it up to date as much as possible but all suggestions welcome. I haven't read Brokem Open so will add it to my list. Have you read Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert? I'm half way through and am finding it a lovely read - much better than the film.

Will no doubt catch up with you on other posts...

Love

Hi Booktalker..

Yes, I have seen the booklist and already added the books to my amazon 'wish list'..  Cheesy. I have read Eat,Pray, Love. Such a page turner...I really loved the book, so much so that I nagged my friends into buying a copy so we could all discuss the  stories LOL. I watched the movie as well when it came out. I agree that the book is better simply coz there is alot more detail in the book that would have been difficult to capture in the movie...though am happy that Julia Roberts did her best to maintain the authenticity of the story...

Am not sure if I saw Khaled Hosseini's novels Kite Runner & A Thousand Splendid Suns on the book list. I haven't read either but have both of them. My friends have read them and say they're really good.

Looking forward to lots more recommendations..

Hahaha... I made a conscious decision now no to watch the moview before reading the book. Am really curious but am gonna hold off.. Grin

Btw...out of topic but just a suggestion, please read Michael Connelly's book The Lincoln Lawyer.. such an excellent book and well written. I always tell everyoe about this book. It's a law thriller kind of book..like John Grisham novels. The movie was released this year starring Matthew McConaughey. Missed it on big screen so I've borrowed it on Lovefilm.

HEY ALL!!

Just finished another interesting read by Elizabeth Gilbert (who wrote Eat, Pray Love so if you didnt like give this a miss. And again book is better than film) This one is called ''Committed'' and it is about Liz's inner battle with coming to terms with Marriage and finding out what Marriage really is. From a relationship point of view its really good and just a nice read also, but she also has some very good, relevant points on relationships and marriage in the 21st century and how and depending on where we are from how we were raised and when we were born how we all view marriage and committment differently. As a social concept Marriage is bloody complicated - getting married, staying married and finding the right person to marry!!

I'm still reading Eat Pray Love (it had to go back to the library in between as I didn't have time to finish it!) and am still loving it, but will add Committed to the list.

For a book reading group I belong to I had to read "Testament of Youth" by Vera Brittain - the autobiography of a young woman writing through the first world war i.e. 1915 or so. I'm not going to suggest anyone reads it unless they have a LOT of time (600 pages) and nothing else to do (not THAT great) but what was fascinating was to see how parents had all the say in what their daughters did, who they saw and where they went.

Spida, did I mention "Why We Love" by Helen Fisher? It explains exactly why we fall in love (yup, it's all brain chemistry I'm afraid!) - absolutely fascinating.

Also I have ordered "Running Free" after hearing its author Kate Allatt on the radio - again, an autobiography - she was a 'normal' busy mother of three kids who woke up one day in hospital unable to move or speak (she'd had a stroke). Everyone assumed she was a vegetable as she was totally paralysed, but she wasn't! In her ward, she could hear families having to decide whether to switch off their loved ones life machines and she was terrified it would happen to her - total and utter living nightmare stuff.

Happy reading...

Holy Moly that sounds like proper heavy reading!!  I assume she's alive and well now??  That would certainly be an interesting read!  Just need to find the time though as things have been very busy as of late....shame as I do love reading!
