Has anyone else watched this film? I loved it - sometimes difficult to keep up with because it's Mexican with subtitles, but really beautiful, absorbing and interesting, especially because it is about culture and tradition surrounding marriage - set in early 1900s. The youngest girl in the family is not allowed to marry but must look after her mother until she dies. The young heroine and hero are in love but their relationship is forbidden... the acting is great and there are some quite 'surreal' scenes (there's lots of superstition around etc). Well worth watching! Love BT xxx

Sounds Good BT - Ill add to my Love film list.

I recently watched West is West the sequel to East is East and although its not as comedy based as the first movie it is equally as powerful and tackles the same issues of identity, family and tradition The young members of the Khan family brought up in England and their father Pakistani born who wants his kids to be more like him, so he takes his unruly youngest son Sajid to Pakistan to live with his first wife, however, he finds that his  wife and daughters there are upset he left them for 30 years and he is not pakistani to them anymore but English.

Little more complex than that but a very good watch. A friend of mine said he was disappointed coz it wasnt as funny as the first, but i thought it was better as it approached a lot of issues with some light heartedness but also a lot of heart and reality too. Definately worth a watch!

I finally got round to watching West is West - excellent, highly recommended - it highlights the problems that mixed marriages face and the cultural divides which affect all generations...  I thought it was really well handled with some very moving and uncomfortably truthful scenes. It would be great if some of the older generation could watch this! My only issue with it is that although it was released in 2010, it is set in the 1970s: I'm not sure why they chose to do this unless it was for 'political correctness', suggesting that these kinds of issues don't happen so much any more??? (Yeah, right...)

I really did enjoy west is west.
And I think for continuity to the Original story they told it in the 1970s but I agree it also makes it seem like it is an old fashioned problem and therefore portrays the issues as not relevant now which we all know is not true!

Would be nice to know what any of our Brit asians esp. Muslim Mixers think too.

Missed watching it with my OH as he wasnt here by the time I got the dvd

Fantasic film..Thanks BT..good reminder when we spoke! I recall really empathising for the white partner and how much she has put up with, but could also see how migration and  cultual change had affected the father in the film...I wondered if they filmed because they were eithe trying to put people off mixed relationships or because they genuinely didn't understand that not everyone behaved like that in mixed relationships and marriage.

Anyone seen Missisippi Masala? Id like to see this again..

I've put it on my lovefilm list but it doesn't seem to be available. The director has made several other films including salaam Bombay which I have at the moment to watch and is meant to be really good too.

My new Bollywood fave is Om Shanti Om. Loved it so much I also downloaded the music too Smiley
